Updating firmware on AR4 & AR5 acoustic recorders
Updating your recorder’s firmware gives you access to new features and bug fixes, including the Alato mobile app for fast and easy device configuration.
It’s a quick process that only takes a few minutes.
What you’ll need
- An SD card
- The latest firmware version - available at alato.co.nz/firmware
- Batteries or a USB power cable
- Your working AR5 or AR4 units.
Steps to install firmware
- Save firmware to an SD Card
Go to alato.co.nz/firmware, download the latest version, and save it onto your SD card.
- Insert SD Card
Place the SD card into your AR5 or AR4 recorder.
- Connect Power
Insert batteries or connect your USB power cable. Do not turn the unit on.
- Start firmware update
Press and hold the right arrow button - do not release this.
While the right arrow button is pressed, tap the PAGE button once to turn the unit on “Flashing ARM” appears on the screen.
The recorder will automatically begin updating. A percentage counter will show progress — this takes about 20 seconds.
- Finish and Confirm
When complete, the recorder will restart and display the new firmware version number.

Common issues
- Unit was already ON: The update won’t start if the recorder is powered on — it will just turn on normally.
- Buttons not pressed together: If you don’t hold both the Page and Right Arrow buttons at the same time, the recorder will simply power up instead of updating.
